Aquasur, the largest aquaculture trade fair in the southern hemisphere, has been postponed from October this year until March 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The event’s executive director, Cristián Solís Aguirre, said the exact new date of the fair, held in Puerto Montt, Chile would be announced within the next fortnight.

He said Aquasur owner, Editec Conferences and Fairs, is assessing all the factors required for the proper development of the event, such as the availability of suppliers of essential equipment and services, opening of borders, operation of hotels in the region, reactivation of internal and international flights and the dates of fairs and conferences around the world, among other elements.

Moments of pain

“We deeply regret the unintentional inconvenience caused to our customers and visitors and are committed to taking all the health precautions indicated by the authorities during the fair,” said Aguirre.

“We know that these are moments of great uncertainty and pain for everyone, but we are confident that Aquasur will remain the main meeting of the aquaculture industry in the southern hemisphere.”

He also thanked all the companies and entities that make it possible to hold the event.

“We are proud of the contribution that our fair represents for the national and international aquaculture sector,” concluded Aguirre.

Postponements and cancellations

Aquasur is just the latest of several major aquaculture events cancelled or postponed because of the pandemic.

Aquaculture UK, which was scheduled to be held in Aviemore in May, was first moved to September and has now been rearranged for May next year.

Aquaculture Europe, the major gathering of aquaculture scientists and experts due to be held in Cork, Ireland from September 29 to October 2, has been postponed until April 12-15 next year.

And the organisers of Seafood Expo Global, the world’s biggest seafood trade fair, had to scrap the 2020 event after first considering moving it from April until later in the year.
