In the fall of '24, Aquaservice delivered the first ever certified service/utility barges to the industry. The delivery was to cod farmer Kime Akva in Hamnvik (Northern Norway), a milestone that has led to a noticeable increase in interest from the industry. Aquaservice CEO Asgeir Skogstad explains the thorough certification process that has been carried out, with a particular focus on safety in the event of fish escapes:
- “We have previously supplied many barges for this purpose, and at the request of customers - we have now developed a certified product that really meets the needs of the industry. The utility barges have been designed in collaboration with our customers over a long period of time, and we can see that this product has hit a nerve so to speak,” says Skogstad.
But what exactly is a utility barge and why is it important?
- These rafts make it possible to connect cages in a way that ensures that any faults on a cable only affect one cage. This means that the fault can be quickly localized and resolved without affecting the entire facility,” explains Skogstad.
![Not only do the utility barges look good, they're also very solidly built - with a practical layout. As a cod farmer, we use a lot of power for light management, and with these barges, organisation becomes significantly easier. They also save us cable lengths with power cables, giving us a streamlined solution that really makes a difference. An added bonus with the certification is that we also get away with fewer buoys, as the barge is certified as an mooring point. This is a complete product that puts HSE at the forefront, and we highly recommend it! In addition to reducing network and cable downtime, the service barges contribute to a better organisation of hoses and cables. This provides a structured workplace and strengthens competitiveness in an increasingly demanding industry.
The barges are certified according to NYTEK23 § 29 and NS 9415:2021, and are made of PEHD material that can take heavy loads and strain - and does not corrode. They come with a sturdy wall for mounting cabinets, a conduit for cables to the cage, and options for attaching stretch loading cables.
With space for 2x11 feed hoses and flexible customizable solutions, they are also recyclable, underlining Aquaservice's commitment to sustainability.
- We look forward to continuing to develop innovative solutions for the aquaculture industry,” Skogstad concludes.
