Innovasea's has added a seabream option to its biomass estimation product, BiomassPro. A sea bass option due later this year will take the number of species covered by the system to seven.

Innovasea adds seabream option to biomass estimation system

United States-headquartered fish farming equipment and technology supplier Innovasea today unveiled what it says is the first commercially available seabream algorithm for biomass estimation.

Innovasea said the algorithm, part of the company’s AI-powered BiomassPro solution, was rigorously tested and proven to deliver over 95% accuracy in real-time with gilthead seabream weight estimations for French seabream and sea bass producer Aquafrais Cannes.

BiomassPro features a fully automated, lightweight (7.5 kg) camera that is easy to deploy and move between pens. Using an advanced algorithm, it analyses fish stocks and autonomously reports precise biomass estimates to a dashboard, eliminating the need for manual sampling.

“We are excited to expand our multi-species offering and bring the first gilthead seabream biomass solution to market,” Innovasea vice president Rafael Cordero said in a press release. “Our compact, portable solution is uniquely suited to meet the demands of seabream farmers who are overseeing numerous pens and require accurate, efficient biomass estimation across their operations.”

Aquafrais Cannes operates more than 150 offshore pens. Innovasea said its BiomassPro camera set-up takes just five minutes and requires only a single person to carry it out. Previously, this set-up process involved four workers and lasted over half an hour at each location.

Real-time data, tracked in the BiomassPro dashboard, enables Aquafrais Cannes to improve growth performance through better monitoring, optimise feed costs with more accurate feed rations, streamline workforce efficiency, and improve fish welfare through non-intrusive sampling.

“Thanks to BiomassPro, we get more precise estimates in less time,” added Jérôme Hémar, general manager at Aquafrais. “Now, we can better predict sales and reassign our lean team from biomass calculations to other vital farm tasks.”

The addition of the seabream algorithm means BiomassPro now supports six species: Atlantic salmon, cobia, gilthead seabream, king salmon, red snapper and yellowtail kingfish. A European sea bass algorithm is scheduled for release later this year.
