GAP recognition for bean gene centre’s sister site
The Centre for Aquaculture Technologies Canada (CATC) has received a certificate of good animal practice (GAP) from the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) for its aquaculture research facility on Prince Edward Island.
The GAP certificate recognises the organisation for the quality of its animal ethics and care in science program.
The Centre for Aquaculture Technologies is a full-service contract research and development organisation focused on the application of biotechnologies to improve productivity, efficiency and sustainability in aquaculture. Founded in 2012, it has specific expertise in fish health, nutrition, genomics and genetics.
Last year its research facility in San Diego was awarded $87,300 from the Soy Aquaculture Alliance to identify genetic markers that can be used to develop soybean meal-tolerant Atlantic salmon broodstock. Genetic improvement of aquatic species can increase tolerance to soy protein ingredients that will enable higher levels of soybean meal to be incorporated into aquaculture feeds, improving growth performance, feed efficiency, and overall health and wellness.
The Prince Edward Island facility is primarily focused on R&D and commercialisation activities in cold water aquatic species. Areas of interest include development and execution of molecular diagnostic assays, and coordination of breeding and genomics programs, and characterisation of new products. The 21,000 square feet aquaculture research facility was constructed in 2015.
