Mussel farmer ropes in experienced executive
Piers Mudd will spearhead fundraise for expansion to 5,000 tonnes per year
Mussel farmer Offshore Shellfish Limited has announced the appointment of seasoned aquaculture executive Piers Mudd as head of strategy.
Mudd will spearhead a strategic fundraise to finance the expansion plans of family-run Offshore Shellfish, which operates a large rope-grown mussel farm in Lyme Bay, Devon.
Offshore Shellfish produces 3,000 tonnes of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) annually and intends to increase production to 5,000 tonnes in the mid-term, and more in the long-term. It is licensed for 10,000 tonnes.

In a press release, Offshore Shellfish said Mudd had a proven track record in enhancing business operations and management systems and will oversee improvements to ensure the company remains at the forefront of sustainable aquaculture.
His most recent role was chief operating officer at Brilliant Planet, where he managed the strategic and operational development of a pioneering ocean-based carbon removal enterprise.
Previously, he was the founding chief executive of FirstWave Group’s East Africa tilapia venture Yalelo Uganda. Under his leadership, Yalelo Uganda grew to 700 tonnes of monthly production in three years, transforming the way consumers accessed sustainably farmed fish across East Africa.
The perfect addition
“I am really excited to join Offshore Shellfish at such a dynamic time in the company’s journey,” said Mudd. “Offshore Shellfish has set the benchmark in sustainable mussel production, and I look forward to contributing to its growth and helping it achieve its full potential as a leader in regenerative aquaculture.”
Offshore Shellfish managing director John Holmyard said the company was delighted to welcome Mudd to its team.
“His leadership experience, deep understanding of the aquaculture sector, and proven ability to drive transformative growth make him the perfect addition as we embark on the next phase of our company’s evolution.”
