Marine ingredients suppliers will learn about the progress made in producing insects for feed and food at a meeting for members of marine ingredients organisation IFFO in Madrid on May 13 and 14.

The presentation by Adriana Casillas, president of the International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed (IPIFF), is part of a session looking at the feed ingredients industry beyond fishmeal and fish oil, on May 14.

Carlos Mera, from Rabobank, will brief IFFO members on agri-commodities markets, and Tufan Eroldogan, head of the aquaculture department at Turkey’s University of Cukurova, will give a talk on microplastics.

Eroldogan is also founder of AquaSpin, a company that provides R&D services to companies within the aquafeed and aquaculture sector and produces innovative nutritional products. Eroldogan and IFFO technical director Brett Glencross are among the co-authors of a 2023 review of the current trends in using various marine organisms, ranging from microorganisms (including fungi, thraustochytrids, microalgae and bacteria) to macroalgae and macroinvertebrates as viable biological feed resources.

The following session – open to producers and premium members only - will give an update on the world’s marine ingredients supply. It includes presentations from IFFO market research director Enrico Bachis; Anne Mette Baek of the European Fishmeal and Fish Oil Producers association; Bret Scholtes, chief operating officer for fish farmer and fishing fleet owner Cooke Inc., United States; Eduardo Goycoolea, IFFO board member for Chile; and Judith Vivar, commercial manager for fishing and processing company Pesquera Exalmar S.A., Peru.

The second day of the meeting explores demand for marine ingredients from the animal farming sector.
