Name change for Brazilian tilapia breeder
AquaGenetics do Brasil, which grows tilapia fingerlings and juveniles, has rebranded as GenoMar Genetics Brasil to reflect what it says is a stronger integration with GenoMar Genetics Group, which supplies tilapia farmers in Asia and Latin America.
GenoMar Genetics Brasil will continue supply its two brands of genetically-selected tilapia: Aquabel and GenoMar.
The fish are chosen for important traits such as growth, survival, and disease resistance. GenoMar says the strains have been optimised over many generations, and provide significant benefits to both farmers and the processing industry.
Investments planned
“This change is a strategic milestone to further strengthen our market position. It reflects the solidity and tradition of the GenoMar Genetics Group, of which we are proud to be a part. Brazil is the fourth-largest producer of tilapia in the world, and we have significant investments planned for this industry,” said GenoMar global chief executive Gustavo Bozano.
GenoMar has production and research centres in Norway, Asia, and Latin America and is a subsidiary of German poultry and aquaculture breeding specialist EW Group, which also owns Norway and Scotland salmon breeder AquaGen.
