Fish welfare dominates the agenda for vets' conference

The Fish Veterinary Society has released the finalised itinerary for its annual spring conference, which will be held at the Norton House Hotel, near Edinburgh, on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

The first day is entirely focused on fish welfare and comprises four sessions: One Welfare; Welfare Monitoring - Real World Considerations; a panel discussion on Communications Around Fish Welfare; and Welfare Monitoring: AI & Forecasting.

There will also be a keynote address by fish vet Felix Scholz, of STIM Ireland, about fish health and welfare in Ireland’s changing marine environment.

Interactive session

The first session of Day 2 starts with an interactive small group discussions on how to improve fish welfare. These will be facilitated by experts in different areas of fish production, health, and welfare.

Ezra Herman, of Esox Biologics, will deliver a keynote address on detection of total microbiome to improve fish health.

The second session includes 20-minute presentations on challenges and advances in the field of myopathies, a spinal deformity scoring system, a wound atlas of the skin of Atlantic salmon, and gill pathology.

Howard Cox, a fish health manager with salmon farmer Mowi Scotland, will update conference attendees on the use of bubble curtains to improve fish welfare.

Session 3 will focus on fish behaviour, including environmental enrichment in aquaculture, and the conference concludes with a look at the future of fish welfare.
