Aquaculture Awards attract entries from across globe

Companies and individuals hoping to scoop a prize at the Aquaculture Awards 2019 have just a few days left to enter if they haven’t already done so.

Published Modified

The awards – previously the Scottish Marine Aquaculture Awards – were renamed and redesigned after the success of last year’s competition at Aquaculture UK in Aviemore.

Organisers decided to hold them annually instead of every two years, and also opened up the awards to entries from outside the UK.

Consequently, this year’s competition has attracted entries from the US, Canada, Norway, France and Tanzania. Entries close on March 1 and the awards will be presented at a dinner at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh on May 29.

Exciting time

The awards cover eight categories: Applied Research Breakthrough; Sustainability; International Impact; People’s Choice; Most Promising New Entrant; Animal Welfare; Tech/Data Innovation; and Diversity.

Category sponsors are Cargill, Mowi, Lloyd’s Register, BioMar, Benchmark, the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation centre (SAIC) and Primerdesign. Organisers are still looking for a sponsor for the People’s Choice Award.

Martin Gill, head of aquaculture and fisheries at Lloyd’s Register, which is sponsoring the Applied Research Breakthrough category, said: “Aquaculture is clearly growing at a phenomenal rate and it’s an exciting time to be involved with businesses across the supply chain.

“It’s great that awards like these celebrate the success stories within the sector and recognise those businesses which are driving growth in new and innovative ways.”

Keen to encourage diversity

The Diversity award – which will be presented to the employer that has done the most to promote diversity in their workforce and/or the sector in general since January 2018 – is being sponsored by SAIC.

Chief executive Heather Jones said: “At SAIC, we are keen to encourage diversity within our exciting industry, whether that be women in aquaculture, the variety of farmed species, the range of businesses operating within the sector – from large multinationals to SMEs – or the wealth of career opportunities that are available.

“We encourage you to enter the Aquaculture Awards and look forward to seeing you in Edinburgh on 29 May!”

Entry to the awards is free and entries can be made here.
