People’s Choice aquaculture award attracts big response
More than 500 votes have so far been received for the People’s Choice award which will be presented at the Aquaculture Awards 2019 in Edinburgh on Wednesday.
There are five contenders for the award, which is open to overseas entrants for the first time.
They are:
- Gorkha Ahedo – field team supervisor, InnovaSea Systems, Panama
- Caitriona Carter, France-based author of The Politics of Aquaculture: Sustainability Interdependence, Territory and Regulation in Fish Farming
- Richard Derbyshire – Orkney regional production manager, Scottish Sea Farms
- Yilin Li – quality control supervisor, INVE Aquaculture, Salt Lake City, United States
- Nathan Pyne-Carter – chief executive, Ace Aquatec, Dundee, Scotland
Still time to vote
Event organiser Susan Tinch said: “We have received over 500 votes so far, and it’s a close-run race!
“There is still time make for people to make their choice. Voting will close at 5pm on Tuesday.”

A wide range of companies and individuals from around the world have made the shortlists for the eight categories of the 2019 awards event, which takes place at Dynamic Earth.
Delighted by interest
With the exception of the People’s Choice, the winners have been chosen by a judging panel.
The other categories are Applied research breakthrough, Sustainability, International impact, Most promising new entrant, Animal welfare, Technical innovation and Diversity.
“We have been thoroughly delighted with the level of interest the awards have generated and we are looking forward to celebrating with the winners of May 29,” said Tinch.
Thought leaders
Wednesday’s awards ceremony, which begins with arrival drinks at 7pm, is preceded by Aquaculture’s Global Outlook: Embracing Internationality, an afternoon of presentations and discussions from thought leaders on key issues facing the industry.
The event is organised by The Fish Site and will begin with an address from Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing.
It will include presentations from Melanie Siggs, director of strategic engagements, Global Aquaculture Alliance; Kolbjørn Giskeødegård, senior seafood analyst at Nordea Bank; Patrick Blow, aquaculture manager with Marks & Spencer; Nicki Holmyard, owner, Offshore Shellfish; David Little, professor of aquatic resources and development, Sustainable Aquaculture Group, Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling; Clifford Spencer, goodwill ambassador for the African Union - New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).
The afternoon session will include a question and answer session with all the speakers.
