College offers free skills update for BC fish farmers
A work training college in British Columbia has launched a programme for aquaculture professionals that is free for eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents, subject to programme criteria and availability.
Excel Career College said the AI in Aquaculture programme is a 17-week, fully funded training initiative developed in collaboration with regional aquaculture leaders. It is designed to equip current workers and students with future-ready skills in artificial intelligence (AI), sustainability, and hands-on aquaculture practices.
“This programme represents a major step forward in preparing British Columbia’s aquaculture workforce for the future,” said Bisman Arora, president and chief executive of Excel Career College. “By blending traditional knowledge with advanced AI tools and industry certifications, we’re offering a unique opportunity to drive innovation and sustainability in one of the province’s key sectors.”
Online and in person
The programme will be delivered in a blended format, combining online theory with hands-on, in-person training at Excel’s campus in Courtenay, on the east coast of Vancouver Island and around 35 miles south of the salmon farming town of Campbell River.
Participants will earn key industry certifications such as WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System), forklift operation, small vessel operator efficiency, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), gender-based analysis+ (used to support the development of responsive and inclusive policies, programs, and other initiatives), Confined Space, and more.
Fish health monitoring
The curriculum explores essential topics, including Introduction to AI and Digital Technologies, AI in Aquaculture, Ethical and Responsible AI Practices, Integration of Traditional and Digital Knowledge, Commercialisation and Entrepreneurship in AI, and Work-Integrated Learning.
Graduates of the programme will gain the knowledge and experience needed to contribute to roles involving AI integration, sustainable aquaculture operations, fish health monitoring, and environmental stewardship.
The college says that through real-world practicum placements and project-based learning, participants will apply their skills in collaboration with local aquaculture facilities.
