AquaChile processing plant now the world’s biggest
AquaChile has completed the expansion of its Quellón process plant in the Los Lagos region, which has made it the largest and salmon plant in the world with an annual production capacity of 140,000 tonnes.
The expansion takes the plant’s capacity well past that of what is now the second-largest plant, Mowi’s Morpol processing facility in Poland, which can produce 90,000 tonnes annually.
AquaChile has invested US $21 million during 2019 in the expansion of the Quellón plant that now processes 50% of the company’s production.

The remodelled plant covers 8,000 square metres and employs 1,000 workers.
“We are very happy with the work done in our Quellón process plant. It is a world-class installation, with cutting-edge technology, automation and control of production processes,” AquaChile production manager Pablo Rodríguez said in a press release.
“In addition, we have the main certifications such as ISO, ASC, BAP, IFS, Halal and Kosher.”
AquaChile’s production capacity following the firm’s agreed takeover by Agrosuper makes it the second biggest player in the world salmon industry, after Mowi.
Its monthly production is enough for more than 150 million meals.
