Norway-based aquaculture supplier Smir Group has appointed Alf-Helge Aarskog, a former chief executive of salmon farming giant Mowi, to its board.

Smir – the name in Norse for “forge” - originally started by developing and offering the Hydrolicer mechanical delousing system and now offers a wide range of systems and services within delousing, waterborne feeding and pen solutions.

“We are very pleased that Alf-Helge Aarskog wants to contribute to the board of Smir Group,” the group’s owner and business developer, Frank Øren, said in a press release.

“His knowledge of the important interaction between technology and biology will be important for our development. At the same time, Smir Group is growing, both geographically and as a company, where we know that Alf-Helge has a lot of experience that will contribute to us being able to do a good job on the board to facilitate our employees.

“Personally, I particularly appreciate that Alf-Helge enjoys having a good discussion to get his views across.”

An exciting direction

Aarskog, who has also been chief executive of Lerøy Seafood Group, currently holds various board positions within the industry and works part-time for his alma mater, the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), and Eide Fjordbruk, a salmon producer that farms in the Hardangerfjord and owns the award-winning Salmon Eye visitor centre.

“I have known Frank Øren since he was operations manager at Fjord Seafood,” said Aarskog.

“Frank and the team have developed Smir Group in an exciting direction, where at the same time the company is moving into areas that are very interesting for the future development of the aquaculture industry. Here I hope that I can help contribute, while also learning more about fish farming.”

Øren said that the salmon industry was already very good in terms of sustainability, but there was still a lot of room for innovation.

“With Alf-Helge on the team, we will be even better equipped to put the truly innovative ideas into action.”
