Scottish Salmon Company nets ex-Marine Harvest boss

The Scottish Salmon Company has appointed highly experienced former Mowi Scotland managing director Alan Sutherland has as marine director.

Sutherland describes himself on his LinkedIn profile as a successful executive who has established an exceptional track record in driving profitable growth within various aquaculture businesses and projects.

He was in charge at Mowi, then known as Marine Harvest, for nine years from 2007 to 2016. He says on LinkedIn that he was appointed by Marine Harvest ASA to turn around the underperforming region, and increased turnover by approximately 132.56% per annum in four years.

Production volume grew from 27,000 tonnes per annum to 50,000 tonnes per annum during his tenure.

From husbandryman to MD

Sutherland holds an honours degree in zoology from Aberdeen University and started his fish farming career as a husbandryman for Crawfords Fish farms in 1982. He progressed through the ranks at other fish farming companies, eventually becoming production director in Canada for Pan Fish ASA in 2003 before moving to Marine Harvest.

As well as his role with the Bakkafrost-owned Scottish Salmon Company, Sutherland is chairman of VeroBlue Farms, in Iowa in the United States. The company formerly produced barramundi in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) and is currently undergoing a restructuring process, the executive said on LinkedIn.
