Norway growing more salmon for 2021
The volume of fish in Norwegian salmon farms at the end of December was 8% higher than at the same time in 2019, monthly figures show.
Norway, the world’s biggest producer of farmed salmon, had 844,000 tonnes of biomass in the water, said statistics provider Akvafakta.
Biomass for trout was 38,000 tonnes, 15% less than at the end of December 2019.
Total salmonid biomass was 58,000 tonnes (7%) larger in December 2020 than a year earlier.
Norway exported 134,000 tonnes last month, 27% more than in December 2019, although the export value was NOK 6.8 billion (9%) lower year on year.
The December biomass figure indicates an increased supply from Norway in 2021, which could keep prices depressed. However, this is likely to be offset by a drop in production in Chile, the world’s second-largest producer of farmed salmon.
