Cooke’s Nova Scotia-based seafood distribution subsidiary AC Covert normally supplies the food service industries, which has been almost completely shut down by the lockdown required to stop the disease spreading, and retailers.

It has switched focus from food service to the public and is offering customers a choice of nine themed seafood boxes which can be bought online for delivery in Atlantic Canada’s three Maritime provinces - Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

Cooke's Smoke From The Water box offers a variety of smoked salmon, plus mackerel and herring fillets.

‘Ideal care package’

“With the travel restrictions we saw an opportunity to make it easier for people to buy seafood from our region,” said Joel Richardson, vice president of public relations for New Brunswick-based Cooke.

“We have been working hard to supply grocery stores, because in the Maritimes seafood is a huge part of our culture which brings comfort during challenging times. Our seafood boxes are an ideal care package to send to family or friends you haven’t seen for a while.

“As a local family company, it is important for us to conveniently provide people with the seafood they love so we can all support sea farmers and fishers.”

Slammin’ Salmon

Cooke said one the most popular offerings is its “Slammin’ Salmon” box offering frozen Atlantic salmon portions, frozen trays of wild Alaska sockeye salmon, cold smoked Atlantic salmon and candied Atlantic salmon.

Its “Fin-tastic Fresh” box, which contains 2lbs of fresh haddock fillets and 2lb of fresh Atlantic salmon fillets, is also a favourite.

“Smoke From The Water” – it’s not known whether this comes in a deep purple box – has a variety of smoked mackerel, herring and salmon, and the “Had Your Cake And Eat It Too” box comes with a recipe card and all the seafood required to make fish cakes.
